System Upgrade... (gulp)
With the release of Mandriva 2008.0, I've decided to do a system upgrade - that means updating everything, including the kernel and (worryingly) glibc. So far it's been going alright, I very stupidly forgot to download an iso of the new release beforehand, so if anything goes wrong and I can't connect to the internet, I'm screwed lol! ;) Actually, I'm downloading a torrent at the same time so with any luck, I'll have a copy in a couple of hours! In fact, it's pretty simple to do upgrades in Mandriva. I just update my sources and off I go with the update facility that comes as part of the system! I set up the sources to the current release a while ago so it always updates to the lastest versions of everything, rather than me having to manually edit all the source locations to the new 2008.0 version first! So right now, I'm busy writing on this blog in firefox, meanwhile, glibc and libstdc++ and all the other important system libraries are being updated... As you can probably guess, this leads to some pretty strange behaviour from firefox - right now, all my fonts are screwed up, and have lost all their anti-aliasing - etc etc, so in efforts to keep my system working, I'm gonna keep this post short! ;) Will post a bit more afterwards perhaps, if I can get it all working again (might have to recompile a few programs/drivers etc... and reconfigure a few basic system components first ;)... For now I'm just gritting my teeth and hoping...
